The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State, Taofeek Adegoke, has sparked reactions after a video of him sharing boiled corn with supporters along a roadside went viral.
In the video, which surfaced on Tuesday, Adegoke is seen standing beside a pot of boiled corn, personally handing it out to supporters who gathered around him.
Many of those at the scene stretched out their hands, insisting on receiving the corn directly from the governorship hopeful. They cheered him on, chanting “Mr Governor” and other campaign slogans as they struggled to get closer.
The clip has generated mixed reactions on social media.
Supporters praised Adegoke, describing him as humble, approachable and connected to ordinary people. Others, however, dismissed the gesture as a familiar campaign strategy often used by politicians to win public sympathy ahead of elections.
Public displays of simplicity have become a common feature of election campaigns in Nigeria. Politicians are often seen eating at roadside food stalls, visiting local markets, riding commercial motorcycles or tricycles, and interacting with residents in a bid to project themselves as being close to the people.
While some voters see such actions as a sign of humility, critics argue they are largely symbolic and aimed at boosting political popularity.
Reacting to the video on TikTok, a user identified as Sam Oladayo wrote, “Very humble governor. Let’s join hands to make him President of the USA.”
Another user, Finiyi Samuel, commented, “Those people following him know he cannot win the election, yet they will still follow him and collect his money.”
Ayinla Kusela described the gesture as “an old-school tactic,” while another user, Atom, wrote, “Old style of fooling people.”
However, Afolayan Femi defended the ADC candidate, saying, “Politics aside, he is a good person.”
