The Ondo State Government has announced restrictions on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okadas, along some routes in Akure, the state capital.
The government said the measure was introduced as part of efforts to improve traffic management and ensure greater compliance with road regulations across the city.
The Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Transport, Olumuyiwa Ogunyemi, disclosed the development while speaking with journalists in Akure on Tuesday.
Ogunyemi said the government would intensify enforcement of traffic regulations and prosecute motorists, commercial motorcycle operators and other road users found violating established rules.
He particularly warned against the disregard of traffic light signals, stressing that road users were expected to obey traffic regulations to reduce violations and improve the movement of vehicles within the city.
According to him, the enforcement forms part of broader measures being implemented by the state government to address traffic challenges in Akure and other parts of Ondo State.
The restriction on commercial motorcycles is expected to affect movement along designated routes where the government considers the activities of okada operators a traffic management concern.
The government also urged motorists and other road users to cooperate with traffic officials and comply with the regulations as enforcement begins.
Ogunyemi maintained that the authorities would not overlook violations, noting that offenders would face prosecution in accordance with the relevant traffic laws.
The latest development comes as the Ondo State Government continues its efforts to strengthen traffic control and promote safer and more orderly road use across the state.
Residents and commercial transport operators are expected to take note of the affected routes and comply with the restrictions to avoid sanctions.
