A disturbing case of alleged domestic violence has thrown residents of the Hotoro area in Kano into shock after a woman reportedly set her co-wife and two young children on fire.
The incident happened late Monday night in the Mai Allo community of Hotoro.
The victims a 28-year-old woman and her two children, aged seven and three are currently receiving treatment at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, and the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. Their father also suffered burns while trying to save them and is undergoing treatment.
A family member said they received an emergency call around 3 a.m., informing them that the woman, her husband, and the children had been attacked in their home.
“We were told my sister, her husband, and the children were set ablaze by her co-wife,” the relative said.
According to him, the victim had only returned to her matrimonial home less than two weeks before the incident.
“She’s about 28 years old, and the children are from her previous marriage. Her husband, who works as a tricycle rider, accepted them as his stepchildren,” he added.
The incident has left many residents shaken, with several calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victims.
“What happened here is heartbreaking. We’ve never experienced something this terrible in this community,” a resident said.
The suspect is currently being held at the Mariri Police Division.
As of the time this report was filed, the Kano State Police Command had yet to release an official statement on the case.
