A woman has appealed to Madonna University to reconsider its decision to expel final-year nursing students who participated in a viral TikTok dance challenge, describing the punishment as too harsh.
In her statement, she argued that expulsion could jeopardise the students’ future, particularly because they were reportedly close to completing their studies.
“Do I agree with the punishment? The expulsion is too harsh for a final-year student and for a first-time offence, and it’s just a dance video, and no patient was harmed,” she said.
She also criticised the university’s message to the affected students, describing it as frightening rather than welcoming, especially in a profession centred on caring for patients.
“Punishment should correct and not destroy. In this case, you are destroying the students you are expelling,” she added, urging the institution to temper justice with mercy.
Her appeal has brought renewed attention to the debate over disciplinary measures in educational institutions, particularly whether expulsion is proportionate when students are accused of misconduct that does not directly involve harming others.
The incident has also raised questions about how universities should balance professional standards, institutional rules and opportunities for students to learn from their mistakes.
The university’s final decision on whether to reconsider the expulsions was not established in the statement provided.
