ABUJA, NIGERIA – The Nigeria Police Force has intensified security measures across the country and issued a warning against any reprisal attacks targeting South African interests following reported incidents of xenophobic violence affecting Nigerians abroad.

The Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Police Force, stated that security agencies are on alert to prevent any breakdown of law and order linked to tensions arising from the reported attacks.

Police authorities urged citizens to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate diplomatic or community tensions between both countries.

According to the statement, security deployments have been strengthened around identified sensitive locations, including South African-owned businesses and diplomatic missions.

The police emphasized that Nigeria remains committed to the protection of all residents and foreign nationals within its territory, regardless of external developments.

Authorities also cautioned against the spread of misinformation and inflammatory messages on social media, warning that such content could fuel unrest or reprisal violence.

The development follows renewed reports of xenophobic attacks in parts of South Africa, which have historically triggered diplomatic concerns and public reactions in Nigeria.

Officials noted that Nigeria and South Africa share important economic and diplomatic relations, making peaceful coexistence and restraint critical in moments of tension.

The police called on community leaders, youth groups, and civil society organisations to discourage any form of retaliation and promote peaceful dialogue.

Security analysts say such preventive measures are essential to avoiding spillover violence, which has occurred in previous episodes of xenophobic unrest.

The federal government is also expected to engage diplomatic channels to address the situation and ensure the protection of Nigerian citizens abroad.

Police spokespersons reiterated that any individual or group involved in reprisal attacks would face the full weight of the law.
