Yellow Eyes Could Signal a Hidden Health Problem

Health professionals are urging the public not to overlook yellowing of the eyes, a condition medically linked to Jaundice, which may signal serious underlying health issues.

The condition develops when bilirubin a yellow pigment formed during the breakdown of red blood cells builds up in the body. When the liver cannot properly process this substance, it accumulates, causing the whites of the eyes and skin to turn yellow.

Liver Trouble Often Behind the Change

Experts say liver-related diseases are among the leading causes of yellow eyes. Conditions such as Hepatitis, Liver Cirrhosis, and Liver Cancer can prevent the liver from functioning properly.

Additional symptoms may include fatigue, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, and unexplained weight loss.

Blocked Bile Flow Can Trigger Yellowing

Medical experts also point to blocked bile ducts as another cause. When bile cannot flow properly often due to Gallstones bilirubin builds up in the body.

This may also be accompanied by severe abdominal pain, nausea, and pale stools.

Infections and Blood Disorders Also Linked

Certain medical conditions affecting the blood can also lead to yellowing of the eyes. Hemolytic Anemia, for instance, increases bilirubin levels due to rapid destruction of red blood cells.

In regions where Malaria is common, the infection can also contribute to jaundice by impacting both the liver and blood cells.

Don’t Ignore the Signs, Experts Warn

Doctors stress that yellow eyes should never be ignored, especially if they appear suddenly or are accompanied by symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or confusion.

They emphasize that jaundice is not a disease itself, but a visible warning sign of potential internal problems. Early medical evaluation remains crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
