Zendaya has opened up about a surprising difference between her life on screen and her personality off camera, revealing that despite being a highly acclaimed actress, she struggles to lie in real life.
The actress explained that acting feels different from deliberately deceiving someone because the emotions she portrays for a character are genuine within the performance.
“I cannot lie. Don’t know how to do it, because the emotions for the character are true, and we can’t lie,” Zendaya said.
She admitted that lying makes her feel guilty, even when she is trying to keep something harmless, such as a surprise, a secret.
“It’s hard. It just makes me feel so guilty,” she explained.
Zendaya said she even struggles to keep gifts secret from people close to her because she becomes too excited and wants to reveal the surprise immediately.
“Even with surprises, if I get somebody a little gift, I have to tell them immediately. I can’t wait,” she said.
The actress jokingly described how she would rather call someone and reveal that she had bought them something than wait several days until they could meet in person.
“I got you something! Want to see it, girl?” she recalled saying.
Zendaya’s comments offer a humorous look at the difference between her ability to convincingly portray characters on screen and her difficulty with keeping secrets in everyday life.
While audiences know her for taking on a wide range of characters, the actress says she finds real-life deception much harder because of the guilt and excitement that come with keeping something from another person.
