On Monday, January 22, 2024, Joseph Boakai, the newly elected president of Liberia, was forced to end his inaugural speech due to “heat-induced faintness.”
The 79-year-old was escorted from the podium during the sworn-in event in the nation’s capital, Monrovia, after giving his acceptance speech and abruptly stopping.

In a statement, the president’s office noted that although Boakai had experienced tiredness, physicians had now pronounced him to be “perfectly fine.”
