DDM News

In a heartwarming celebration of Children’s Day, 12-year-old Chiderije Mbah was appointed the One-Day Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank Plc on Monday, May 27, 2025.
This remarkable appointment formed part of a broader initiative by Wema Bank to mark its 80th anniversary while simultaneously promoting financial literacy and leadership skills among Nigerian children.
The initiative was executed through a social media challenge that invited children to showcase their creativity around financial education.
Chiderije Mbah emerged as the winner of the challenge after she submitted an animated short film focused on demystifying finance and making it fun and accessible to kids.
Her creative presentation impressed both the public and a panel of internal judges, earning her the rare opportunity to step into the role of the bank’s chief executive for a day.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the Children’s Day appointment was one of many innovative events planned by Wema Bank to strengthen its commitment to youth empowerment and community development across Nigeria.
The bank, which was founded in 1945, is Nigeria’s longest-surviving indigenous bank and has consistently led initiatives that blend innovation with social responsibility.
The acting MD/CEO, Chiderije Mbah, had the opportunity to engage with senior executives, participate in strategy sessions, and deliver a motivational address to staff at the bank’s headquarters.
She was warmly received by the actual MD/CEO of Wema Bank, Mr. Moruf Oseni, who expressed admiration for her intelligence, confidence, and visionary outlook.
Mr. Oseni noted that the symbolic passing of leadership from an adult executive to a child underscores the importance of bridging generations and preparing youths for future leadership roles.
He praised the bank’s 80th anniversary theme, which focuses on creating impact through innovation, inclusion, and youth engagement.
Chiderije’s appointment has since garnered widespread praise on social media, with many Nigerians commending Wema Bank for taking deliberate steps toward grooming future leaders.
The initiative has also sparked conversations about integrating financial education into the basic school curriculum in Nigeria.
Wema Bank’s history of innovation includes the launch of ALAT, Nigeria’s first fully digital bank, and its continued push toward digital inclusion in underserved communities.
By honoring Children’s Day with a practical leadership experience, Wema Bank hopes to inspire thousands of Nigerian children to dream boldly and pursue roles of influence in the finance sector and beyond.
