17 children die, others injured as fire razes Islamic school in Zamfara

Over 17 students have lost their lives and 16 others seriously injured following a fire outbreak at an Islamiya school in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The fire which according to media reports broke out late Tuesday night, raged for nearly three hours before being brought under control.

Despite efforts to put out the fire, it caused extensive damage and unfortunate loss of life.

A resident, Abdulrasaq Bello Kaura, revealed that the fire started from stored sticks, locally known as kara, which quickly spread to the study hall of Makaranta Mallam Ghali, where about 100 students were gathered for their studies.

“It happened inside their study hall. After evacuating the students, they assumed no one was left inside, but when they returned after the fire, they started seeing hands and legs. They got burnt beyond recognition,” he said.

The deceased students were buried on Wednesday in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government, Comrade Mannir Muazu Haidara, confirmed the tragic incident.

Muazu noted that he was on his way to assess the situation.
