2017 Global Hand Washing Day: Nigerians Urged To Be Hand Washing Ambassadors

In the quest to create a healthy society, the Laka Youth Development Association (LYDA), urged Nigerians to imbibe the hand washing culture which is an easy, effective and affordable way of preventing diseases

and saving lives.

The caretaker chairman of the LYDA , Mr. Reuben Onde Yohanna, gave the call Monday, on the occasion of the 2017 global hand washing day celebration held at the Jimeta ultra modern market in Yola, the

Adamawa state capital.

The celebrations was organized by the Laka Youth with support from the state ministries of Health and water resources, CISLAC, Adama Beverages, Gotel Communications, and the state owned TV and radio stations (ATV and ABC).

Yohanna, disclosed that the theme for this year’s celebration, “Our hands, our future” reminds us that hand washing protects not only our own health, but also allows us to build our future, that of our immediate community and the world at large.

According to him, the choice of Jimeta market was influenced by the desire to encourage traders and drivers to cultivate the culture of hand washing with soap as a way of maintaining hygiene.

“We want to encourage market trader to be agent of change and hand washing ambassadors in the market and their communities and also set up hand washing stations all around them”, he stated.

The care taker chairman said the success recorded during last year’s celebration (2016) encouraged the association to celebrate the global hand washing day this year.

Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Daniel Yohanna, Director Hydrology and Hydrogeology, ministry of water resources, maintained that nobody should be left out of the hand washing campaign in view of its

importance.

He challenged all present to imbibe the hand washing culture and stay healthy.

Alhaji  Bello Adamu, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers  (NURTW) Adamawa state chapter promise that his members across the state will cultivate the habit of washing their hands with soap  to remain healthy.

The global hand washing day is an annual advocacy event which was founded by the Global Hand washing Partnership and celebrated on October 15, it is dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding
