Former Minister of Transportation and African Democratic Congress (ADC) Vice Presidential Candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu, urging Edo residents to reject him in the 2027 presidential election.

Amaechi made the remarks on Thursday at a town hall meeting in Edo State, where he called on residents to support the opposition.

The former minister said those backing Tinubu were making the wrong choice, using strong words to describe supporters of the President.

“They are going about saying ‘Vote Tinubu! Vote Tinubu!’ Only thieves can vote for Tinubu. In fact, I read a comment on social media where someone said, ‘It’s in 2027 that we will know how many mad men we have in Nigeria,’” Amaechi said.

“Because it’s only a mad people that can vote for Tinubu. If Edo people vote for President Tinubu, that means Edo people are mad. If you’re not mad, Tinubu should not win here,” he added.

Amaechi also accused the Tinubu administration of pursuing some projects based on financial interests rather than broader economic needs.

He questioned the planned development of another seaport in Ogun State, asking whether the state generates enough cargo to justify additional port infrastructure.

“So, Tinubu just hates you. No, I’m not joking. If Tinubu does not hate you, why is he building another seaport?” he asked.

Amaechi argued that the government should focus on projects that directly address the economic needs of Nigerians.

He also urged opposition supporters to return home and participate in the electoral process if they want a change of government.

“If you want Tinubu to go, please go home. Go home. Go home,” he said.

On petrol subsidy, Amaechi proposed a production-based subsidy that would involve selling crude oil to Nigerian refineries at a lower domestic price than the international market price.

He said the policy would reduce the cost of petrol without requiring the government to directly pay fuel subsidies.

Amaechi proposed that crude sold internationally for ₦15,000 could be sold to Dangote Refinery and modular refiners at ₦10,000 domestically, with the ₦5,000 difference serving as the subsidy.

He argued that lower petrol prices would also help reduce the cost of goods and services across the country.
