2027: Atiku Denies Plan to Step Down For Any Candidate

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed claims that he plans to step down for a younger candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

He described the reports as misleading and a misrepresentation of his recent interview with the BBC Hausa Service.

Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, issued a statement on Thursday to set the record straight.

He said the opposition leader never stated, suggested, or implied that he would withdraw from the 2027 race.

According to the statement, Atiku only emphasized that young aspirants are free to contest.

He added that if a young candidate wins the primary election, he would fully support such a person without hesitation.

“It has become necessary to clarify certain misrepresentations from the reportage of His Excellency’s interview with the BBC Hausa Service,” Ibe explained.

“After reviewing both the video and transcripts, it is clear that the former Vice President never said he would step down for anyone.”

The media adviser stressed that Atiku’s position remains consistent.

He welcomes competition and encourages the participation of young leaders but has no intention of withdrawing from the contest himself.

“Interpretative journalism is acceptable,” Ibe continued, “but stretching interpretation to the point of mischief is unacceptable and must not be encouraged.”

He further insisted that the insinuations attributed to Atiku were inaccurate and do not reflect his actual words.

Atiku, who has contested for the presidency multiple times, is seen as a key opposition figure ahead of the 2027 elections.

His latest clarification signals his determination to remain active in the race while also leaving room for younger candidates to emerge through democratic processes.

Observers believe this statement aims to counter speculations of a generational shift in leadership that could edge him out of the political spotlight.

For Atiku, the focus now is on keeping the opposition united and competitive ahead of 2027.
