Ahead of the 2027 polls, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has reportedly proposed a political alliance with Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last election, offering him the vice presidential slot on the condition that he will serve only one term.
Multiple insider sources reveal that this proposal was initially discussed during a private meeting between the two political heavyweights in the United Kingdom earlier this year.
Obi, who was Atiku’s running mate in 2019 under the PDP, News Band understand, is said to be open to the idea but is consulting with his loyalists before committing fully.
The potential alliance is part of broader efforts to build a united opposition coalition against President Bola Tinubu.
The former Vice President, Obi, and other political figures such as Nasir El-Rufai have already announced plans to collaborate.
Though, internal crises within both PDP and LP have complicated the process, prompting them to consider alternative platforms like the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Discussions with ADC leaders are ongoing, and several loyalists from both camps have reportedly engaged with the party’s leadership.
While official confirmations is on hold, there are strong indications that a written agreement between Atiku and Obi is being considered, with the possibility of launching their campaign on a new platform if internal party issues remain unresolved.
Despite denials and caution from some of Obi’s allies, the momentum for a coalition remains strong.
However, not all political voices are in favor—some PDP members argue Atiku should step aside and let new leaders emerge, questioning his repeated presidential ambitions.
As the high political horse trading continue, the political landscape remains fluid, with key decisions expected in the coming months.
