2027: Atiku Wants Power, Not a Southern President — Kachikwu

Dumebi Kachikwu, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has come out strongly against any plans by Atiku Abubakar to contest the 2027 presidential election on the ADC platform.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, July 17, 2025, Kachikwu accused the former Vice President of attempting to hijack the party through a self-serving political coalition.
He warned that the coalition, allegedly backed by Atiku, seeks to destabilize the party for personal political gain.
Kachikwu claimed that some state party chairmen had been offered N20 million each to resign.
He described this as proof that the coalition’s motives are far from noble.
“This is a man whose history shows he doesn’t believe in a southern presidency,” Kachikwu said. “Atiku wants power only for himself.
He even tried to truncate Obasanjo’s government. Now, he’s using charlatans to drag Peter Obi into a vice-presidential ticket again.”
He further challenged Atiku to publicly support a southern candidate if he truly believes in equity and fairness.
According to Kachikwu, the group claiming to represent the ADC is not made up of real party members. He described them as a “political gang” rather than a coalition.
“They are on a rescue mission, but it’s not for Nigeria it’s for themselves,” he stated.
Kachikwu dismissed accusations that he is a spokesperson for President Bola Tinubu.
“It would be an honour, but I’m not,” he said. “Political jobbers with no visible means of livelihood love to insult others, but I remain focused.”
He warned the public not to be fooled by staged events where people are allegedly paid to pose as defectors joining the ADC.
He also condemned the claim that only current party officials should comment on party affairs, calling it “elitist ignorance.”
Kachikwu ended with a direct challenge to Atiku: “If you believe in justice, say it openly that the presidency should stay in the South. Support a southern candidate and step back.”
He concluded that the ADC stands for fresh leadership and is not “an old people’s home.”
He added, “Nigeria needs new faces and bold ideas. This fight for power among the old politicians is not our fight. In the ADC, the people come first.”
