2027: COPDEM, ADC others form democratic alliance ahead of election
DDM News
As the 2027 elections draw nearer, the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has officially announced its partnership with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that the alliance marks a pivotal step in reshaping Nigeria’s political future and laying the foundation for a more democratic, inclusive government.
The two organizations and others are determined to work together to challenge the entrenched political order and promote a democratic alternative for Nigerians across all regions.
Prince Rwang Pam Jnr., the National Chairman of COPDEM, confirmed the alliance in a statement made available to the press on friday, 31th January 2025.
He emphasized that “this collaboration is necessary to bring about real political change in Nigeria,” urging the need for a unified opposition that could deliver effective governance.
According to Mr. Pam, Nigeria’s civil society and progressive movements have been fragmented for too long, and this has weakened the opposition’s ability to challenge the status quo.
In his statement, Mr. Pam outlined the long-standing issue of Nigeria’s civil society and progressive forces operating in silos.
He pointed out that this disorganization has resulted in a scattered collective effort that has only allowed the current political system to remain intact.
However, he stressed that this situation is set to change with the new alliance between COPDEM and ADC.
As part of their strategy to unite the country’s progressive forces, the two organizations have introduced the Directorate of Mobilisation, Civil Societies, and Progressive Engagements.
“This new body will be responsible for uniting like-minded groups, activists, and organizations under a coordinated structure with the goal of strengthening democratic processes across Nigeria.
“The Directorate’s primary mission will be to build a politically engaged citizenry that can drive democratic change at every level of governance.”
The new structure, Mr. Pam explained, will act as a bridge between grassroots movements, political actors, and advocacy groups, offering a unified front to challenge existing power structures.
“This collaborative approach will allow the organizations to better influence policies and bring about electoral victories that favor the needs of the people.”
He emphasized that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between COPDEM and ADC is more than just an agreement between two political parties—it is part of a larger, strategic move to institutionalize opposition politics in Nigeria.
“The merger aims to transform advocacy into tangible political influence, setting the stage for a strong democratic opposition that will advocate for the welfare of the people.
“One of the key goals of the COPDEM-ADC alliance is to strengthen ADC as a leading platform for progressive forces.
“This will be accomplished by fostering greater participation from grassroots and civil society groups in Nigeria’s political processes, he continued.
“The alliance plans to mobilize all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) toward a more people-centered, issue-based governance model that focuses on the needs and aspirations of ordinary Nigerians.
“Through the Directorate of Mobilisation, COPDEM and ADC are also focusing on aligning their grassroots networks with ADC’s political structure.
“This integration will ensure that both organizations are not just united on paper but actively working toward a more democratic Nigeria, ” Mr Pam stated.
Together, they aim to build a political platform that represents the democratic interests of the people and challenges the current leadership in the country.
The coalition is calling on civil society groups, progressive movements, and activists to join the movement for democratic change.
Mr. Pam stressed that now is the time to engage with the newly formed Directorate and play an active role in shaping the political future of Nigeria.
He clarified that the Directorate is not just a bureaucratic platform but a highly action-oriented body that will channel the energy of grassroots movements into tangible political power.
He further noted that it is time for opposition forces to move beyond the fragmentation that has plagued them in the past.
With this alliance, COPDEM and ADC are consolidating their efforts and unifying their resources to create a formidable opposition capable of challenging the status quo.
By bringing together diverse groups with a shared democratic vision, the two organizations are positioning themselves as the vanguard of democratic change in Nigeria.
The coalition is also seeking international support for their cause, acknowledging that Nigeria’s democracy is at a critical juncture.
Mr. Pam called on global democratic institutions and partners to support the emerging alliance and engage with the movement for change.
He emphasized the importance of the role of civil society in shaping electoral outcomes and ensuring that Nigeria’s governance is transparent, accountable, and truly democratic.
This announcement comes at a time when Nigeria’s political landscape is in dire need of reform.
With the upcoming elections just around the corner, COPDEM and ADC believe this strategic alliance will ensure that the 2027 elections become a turning point in the country’s democracy.
By presenting a disciplined, results-driven alternative to the current leadership, the alliance hopes to offer Nigerian voters a clear choice between the status quo and a more democratic, inclusive future.
As part of the coalition’s broader strategy, they are also focused on mobilizing citizens, engaging with grassroots movements, and building awareness about the democratic importance of the upcoming elections.
COPDEM and ADC are committed to ensuring that Nigeria’s democratic institutions are strengthened and that the voices of the people are heard in the decision-making processes that shape the country’s future.
Prince Pam concluded his statement by reiterating that this is a defining moment for Nigeria’s democracy.
“The COPDEM-ADC alliance is not just about political parties coming together—it is about forging a new era of democratic change.
“The time for rhetoric and fragmentation is over, he stated.
“Now is the moment to act.”
The coalition is determined to move forward with a clear vision and purpose, working to ensure that Nigeria’s future is shaped by democratic values and accountable governance.
In the coming months, COPDEM and ADC will focus on expanding their network, mobilizing support, and engaging Nigerians from all walks of life to participate in the democratic process.
Through their combined efforts, the coalition aims to build a political structure that will serve as a strong alternative to the current political establishment.
With the 2027 elections fast approaching, the two organizations are confident that they are on the right path to delivering a more democratic and inclusive Nigeria.
“This alliance represents more than just a political partnership—it is the beginning of a new democratic movement that seeks to empower the people and bring about meaningful change.
“COPDEM and ADC are ready to face the challenges ahead, knowing that their united efforts will help shape a Nigeria that works for all its citizens.
“The 2027 elections will serve as a crucial opportunity to build a democratic Nigeria that is truly representative of its people, he added.
