Sule Lamido, former Governor of Jigawa State and a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has declared that his personal friendship with President Bola Tinubu will not deter him from opposing the president in the 2027 elections.
Lamido made this clear during an interview, emphasizing that while he and Tinubu share a longstanding relationship, their political differences remain intact.
The statement comes after Lamido and Tinubu were spotted sharing a lighthearted moment at a wedding in Kaduna, which sparked speculation about their political alignment.
Lamido recounted the encounter, saying: “I told him, ‘You look nice,’ and he replied, ‘Sule, I love you because you are trustworthy.’ We laughed and left.”
However, he insisted that the interaction was purely personal and does not translate into political support.
Lamido reiterated his commitment to uniting opposition forces against the APC-led government, which he criticized for insecurity, economic challenges, and ethnic divisions.
He also expressed his belief that every Nigerian has the right to hold the president accountable, stating: “If the president is wrong, there’s nothing wrong in telling him the truth.”
Despite recent defections of key figures like Atiku Abubakar to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Lamido remains loyal to the PDP and focused on resolving internal party issues to strengthen opposition efforts.
He stressed that his actions are driven by national interest, adding, “What we are doing is not for ourselves but for the people.”
