2027: Ohanaeze Breaks Silence on Opposition Coalition, Sends Clear Message

As political alignments begin to form ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has reiterated its non-partisan stance, emphasizing that its core concern lies in the socioeconomic wellbeing of Nigerians rather than political affiliations.
Ohaneze disclosed this in an exclusive interview in Enugu, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr. Ezichi Chukwu, said the group was not affiliated with any political party and remains focused on advocating for policies that promote justice, equity, and good governance.
“Ohanaeze is not interested in partisan politics per se and is not an affiliate of any party,” Chukwu stated. “The concern of Ohanaeze is the socioeconomic wellbeing of the citizens.”
The statement comes in the wake of a newly announced opposition coalition, which recently adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming presidential race.
Ohanaeze’s position, however, makes it clear that it is staying above the fray of partisan contests.
Push for Restructuring, Not Personalities
Dr. Chukwu emphasized that the organization envisions a Nigeria governed by strong, independent institutions rather than being dominated by “supermen and demigods.”
He reaffirmed Ohanaeze’s longstanding position advocating for restructuring as a cornerstone for building a true federal system.
“Ohanaeze is a proponent of restructuring, which we see as a necessary condition for true federalism and its derivatives,” Chukwu explained.
“These include decentralisation of power, resource control, fiscal federalism, devolution of powers, institutional accountability, and healthy competition.”
A Call for Sustainable Governance
Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s latest remarks highlight the group’s vision for a restructured Nigeria that fosters fair representation, economic balance, and regional autonomy principles that, it argues, are fundamental for long-term national stability and unity.
While political coalitions gear up for the next electoral cycle, the group’s clear message is that good governance not political endorsements is the priority for Ndigbo and for Nigeria at large.
