2027: Peter Obi Denies Defection to PDP

Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2023 election, has shut down growing rumours that he plans to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 polls.
In a firm statement released on Tuesday, July 29, his media aide, Ibrahim Umar Wase of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), said Obi is not switching camps.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, described the trending statement circulating in his name as fake and misleading.
He said it falsely claimed he denied joining the PDP while pledging allegiance to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“The Peter Obi Media Reach has been alerted to a false statement circulating online. It falsely claims that Peter Obi reaffirmed his loyalty to the ADC and denied joining the PDP,” the release read.
Obi’s team made it clear that he has not declared support for any political party shift, nor has he issued such a statement.
He remains focused on building a “New Nigeria,” his team stressed.
“Peter Obi has consistently shared his stance on coalition efforts. He doesn’t need anyone to speak on his behalf,” the statement read.
The release also warned against political propaganda. “He will not tolerate false attributions made to serve anyone’s personal or political agenda.”
The statement urged the public to rely only on official messages from Obi’s verified media handles.
This clarification followed claims made by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, a former governor of Borno State and APC chieftain.
Sheriff, in a Channels Television interview, alleged that Obi would soon return to the PDP and run for president under its platform.
Sheriff said: “As far as politics is concerned, the ADC does not exist. From what I’ve heard, Peter Obi will soon return to the PDP and contest as its presidential candidate.”
Obi’s media office has now debunked the claim, insisting he remains committed to his current political vision and will continue to speak for himself through verified platforms.
