Babajide Sanwo-Olu has thrown his weight behind his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship race.
The endorsement came after a closed-door meeting at Lagos House in Marina, where Hamzat formally declared his intention to run, in the presence of key party leaders and members of the State Executive Council.
Among those at the meeting were prominent figures, including former Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro and party stalwart Ganiyu Solomon.
Speaking after the meeting, Sanwo-Olu described Hamzat as prepared for the job, pointing to their years of working closely together in government.
“He is fit for the role and understands the demands of leadership,” the governor said, highlighting Hamzat’s experience and commitment to public service.
Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the role of Bola Tinubu in fostering the partnership between him and his deputy, noting that the endorsement reflects ongoing consultations within the ruling party.
The move signals an early alignment within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections begin to gather pace.
With backing from party leaders and government insiders, Hamzat is now widely seen as a frontrunner in what is expected to be a closely watched governorship race.
