2027: Why Peter Obi May Dump Coalition and Rejoin PDP — Sheriff

Former Borno State Governor and ex-PDP National Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, believes Peter Obi will return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before the 2027 presidential election.
He made this bold claim on Monday, July 28, during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
Sheriff did not mince words. He dismissed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as irrelevant and predicted its collapse within months. “As far as politics is concerned, ADC doesn’t exist,” he said.
“Give the party three months, and it will die down. From the information I have, Peter Obi will return to PDP soon and contest as its presidential candidate.”
Obi, who once governed Anambra State, left the PDP in May 2022 just days before the presidential primary.
He joined the Labour Party (LP) on May 27, 2022, and ran in the 2023 general election. He came third behind President Bola Tinubu of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.
Lately, Obi has joined forces with the Coalition for Nigeria, a new political alliance led by ADC and other minority parties.
This move sparked debate about his next steps ahead of the 2027 election.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s interim publicity secretary, dismissed Sheriff’s comments as baseless.
Speaking on Arise Television, Abdullahi insisted Obi remained committed to the new coalition.
“Peter is in the coalition, no matter what anyone says,” he stated. “He understands that the ruling party still holds PDP’s jugular.
He knows returning to PDP would be a political gamble.”
Abdullahi stressed that the coalition was not rushing to name a candidate. “Our party is only a month old.
Right now, we’re focused on building strong democratic structures,” he said. “The question of who will run for president is something we’ll address later.”
Although PDP officials have remained quiet, party elder Jerry Gana recently hinted at moves to persuade Obi to come back.
These whispers have added fuel to speculations about a potential high-stakes comeback.
Obi has yet to respond publicly to Sheriff’s claim.
However, political insiders are watching closely, with 2027 drawing nearer and the race for Nigeria’s future already taking shape.
