At least 21 people have died after a boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of Senegal, the country’s Interior Ministry has said.
The ministry disclosed this in a statement posted on X on Sunday, November 8, 2026, saying rescue teams had recovered 21 bodies and rescued one survivor as of Saturday evening.
The incident occurred off the coast of Kebemer, a town located about 180 kilometres north of Senegal’s capital, Dakar.
Search and rescue operations were still ongoing as authorities searched for other people who might have survived the accident.
According to the ministry, the boat was carrying people attempting to migrate irregularly.
However, it did not disclose the total number of passengers on board when the vessel sank.
The latest tragedy adds to the growing number of deaths recorded along the dangerous migration route from West Africa to Spain’s Canary Islands.
Thousands of migrants have lost their lives in recent years while attempting the journey across the Atlantic Ocean.
According to migrant rights organisation Walking Borders, 635 people died while trying to reach the Canary Islands from West Africa in the first five months of 2026 alone.
