At least 21 people, including 20 schoolchildren, were killed after a school bus crashed and overturned in Uganda on Friday.

According to the Uganda Police Force, the bus, carrying pupils of King David Junior School in Kampala, was returning from an excursion to Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa District when the accident occurred.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road, hit a large roadside stone and overturn.

Police said the crash claimed the lives of 20 pupils and one adult male, while three adult men and several children sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Road accidents remain a major concern in Uganda, where poor road conditions and reckless driving continue to contribute to high fatality rates.

In October 2025, at least 46 people were killed in a collision involving two buses, while official data recorded 5,144 road deaths from 4,434 fatal crashes in 2024.
