30 School Principals, Arrested Over Illegal Levies In Anambra – Obiano
*urges farmers cooperatives to enable them benefit from govt special support packages
The Anambra state Governor, Chief Willie Obiano has revealed that no fewer than thirty persons including two school principals have so far been arrested for collection of illegal and unauthorized levies and revenues in parts of the state.
The culprits, according to the governor were apprehended by special inspection and monitoring team on the effective implementation and abuses of the state’s economic stimulus package recently introduced by his administration.
He urged citizens, including communities, parents and guardians to report abuses of the recently announced economic relief/stimulus packages to his administration for immediate action, pointing out that his administration was sustaining the war against collection of unapproved levies by individuals parading as government agents.
Gov Obiano noted that the levies were abdicated by his administration to give the people some financial respite in view of the prevailing economic recession, and revealed that so far, more than 30 persons, including two school principals, have been arrested and arraigned for fraudulently collecting various categories of unapproved levies from citizens and pupils in parts of the state.
He urged the people to support the administration in the implementation of the economic stimulus package by reporting anyone found to be exploiting them in the name of collecting levies for government, for prompt disciplinary action.
The governor who spoke at the pontifical high mass held at St Joseph’s Catholic Parish, Oraukwu in Idemili North council of the state, to mark 50 years anniversary of the Parish called on the citizens of the state, especially participants in the vegetables export business initiative to organize themselves in cooperative groups to enable them benefit adequately from government’s agricultural support packages so as to boost their production.
He acknowledged that Oraukwu Community has continued to play key role in the state’s vegetables export business arrangement.
Obiano advocated brotherly love and care for one among all as true Christians as a sure way to overcome the negative implications of the present economic recession.
In a homily, the auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Onitsha, Rev Dennis Isizor described anniversary celebrations as a period of stock-taking and reflection, pointing out that Oraukwu Community was famous for its numerous sons who have contributed immensely towards the advancement of Christianity urging the community to utilize the event to solidify their faith in God and commitment towards promoting evangelism.
The community’s monarch, HRH Igwe Emeka Onuorah said that Oraukwu community in the recent has been placed on a steady course of growth and development through Gov Obiano’s careful resolution of the leadership skirmishes that had undermined the people’s collective struggle towards advancement, and described the event as another milestone in their efforts to build a prosperous community.
A son of the community, Chief Basil Ejidike, described the event as celebration of 50 years of God’s faithfulness to the citizens.
