327 arrested for illegal mining in Nigeria since 2024- Alake

Abuja, Nigeria – Nigeria’s government has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining, arresting 327 suspects since 2024.

Minister Dele Alake announced this during a Friday press conference marking the Mining Marshals’ first anniversary.

He emphasized efforts to combat illegal activities and protect mineral resources.

Collaborating with agencies, the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development prosecuted 143 individuals.

Recently, the Federal High Court in Ilorin sentenced foreigners Yang Chao and Wu Shan Chuan to prison. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured their convictions.

Additionally, the EFCC prosecuted two foreigners in May 2023. Duan Ya Hong and Xiao Yi received one-year sentences for illegal mining. Alake praised the EFCC’s diligence, citing these cases as progress.

Meanwhile, the Mining Marshals recovered 98 illegal mining sites last year. Licensed operators have since resumed work, boosting royalty payments and sector revenue. This recovery strengthens Nigeria’s economic diversification goals.

Furthermore, the task force identified 457 suspected illegal sites nationwide. Improved intelligence gathering now enhances monitoring of these locations. Alake affirmed this strategy ensures stricter compliance with mining laws.

The minister expressed optimism about fostering a sustainable mining industry. He reiterated support for licensed operators while enforcing zero tolerance for illegal activities. These measures aim to stabilize the sector.
