At least 35 people were killed and 30 others injured after two passenger buses collided on a major highway in central-eastern Syria on Saturday, according to state media.
Syria’s state news agency, SANA, quoted a Health Ministry official as saying the crash occurred on the Damascus–Deir Ezzor road between the Sukhna and Palmyra areas.
The Interior Ministry said one of the vehicles was carrying personnel of the country’s internal security forces, while the other was a civilian passenger bus.
Authorities did not immediately specify how many of the victims were security personnel.
Footage broadcast by state media showed one of the buses engulfed in flames, with debris scattered across the highway as emergency responders worked at the scene.
Military helicopters were deployed to evacuate the dead and injured from Palmyra Airport to Homs Military Hospital.
The latest tragedy comes weeks after another fatal road accident in southern Syria, where five people, most of them Lebanese pilgrims returning from Saudi Arabia, were killed when their bus overturned in Daraa province. Local authorities attributed that crash to excessive speed.
Road accidents remain a recurring problem in Syria, where years of conflict have damaged transport infrastructure and emergency response systems.
In 2025, at least 12 people were killed when a passenger bus collided with an oil tanker in northeastern Syria.
