At least five soldiers and numerous suspected terrorists were killed on Monday during a violent clash along the Lilo–Gulubba Road in Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The troops were escorting traders en route to Gusau market when a large group of armed bandits ambushed their convoy in a surprise attack.
An eyewitness identified as Mohammed Isa recounted the harrowing incident, explaining that the bandits had concealed themselves by the roadside before suddenly opening fire on the convoy.
“Pandemonium broke out as passengers fled into the bush for safety, while the soldiers immediately retaliated, engaging the bandits in a fierce gunfight,” Isa said.
He added that the exchange left five soldiers dead and numerous bandits killed. Several civilians sustained injuries and were rushed to the General Hospital in Kotorkoshi for treatment.
Isa further detailed the bravery of the soldiers, saying: “We were heading to Gusau town with military escorts when the bandits launched their attack. The soldiers fought back valiantly, killing many of the bandits, but sadly, five soldiers lost their lives. Some passengers were seriously injured, but many managed to escape unharmed. When the bandits realized they were losing the fight, they retreated to their hideouts.”
When contacted, Army spokesperson Captain David Adewusi stated that he was unaware of the incident but promised to provide updates. As of the time of filing this report, no further information had been released.
