56 dead following twin Madagali Friday suicide bomb attacks
Mr. Yusuf Muhammed, Chairman, Madagali Local Government, Adamawa has confirmed that 56 persons died and 177 injured in the twin blasts that hit Madagali Market in Adamawa state on Friday.
Elombah.com gathered that the blasts were caused by two female teenage bombers.
Our correspondent, who visited the scene, saw some of the injured and reported that many were in critical condition, including several minors.
Some of the injured were taken to Mubi General Hospital and Yola Specialists Hospital, though that sustained minor injuries were treated and discharged.
The high rate of casualties was linked to the fact that Madagali Market operates on Fridays and the blasts occurred at very busy sections of the market.
Earlier, the National Emergency Maintenance Agency [NEMA] Head of Media and Public Relations, Mr Sani Datt, had issued statement on the incident.
Although Mr. Datt did not give number of dead persons, he stated that 67 people were injured.
Adamawa Government, through the state Commissioner for Information, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, condemned the incident.
Sajoh said Gov. Muhammadu Bindow has directed all relevant agencies to mobilise and move to render support to the affected.
He said government would take responsibility of the medical bills of those affected, adding that reports reaching him indicated that four out of the 67 injured had passed away.
The Madagali blast was coming nearly a year after a similar blast in the market which occurred on Dec. 20 2015.
The latest blast is the third in Madagali, following attacks by two female suicide bombers on December 28, 2015, at a busy motor park.
