Six villagers have been killed in two separate attacks in Agatu local government area of Benue State.

The sad attacks occurred over two days, with one person killed in Iwari community and five others in Olegagbane.

A resident who doesn’t want to be quoted because of security reasons, revealed that the first attack took place in Iwari, where armed invaders killed one person and injured several others.

The following day, on Friday, August 23, 2024, the attackers struck Olegagbane, leaving five dead.

Phillip Ebenyakwu, the Chairman of Agatu LGA, confirmed the incidents and expressed concern over the repeated attacks.

He said, “It’s true. These armed invaders kill, steal, loot, and then flee. Their motives remain unclear, but they continually return to attack and kill. The situation has become unbearable”.

He further noted the growing humanitarian crisis in the area, with over 2,000 displaced individuals from seven, possibly nine, deserted villages.

He added that while the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) provided some relief materials, it was insufficient to meet the needs of the displaced population.
