(DDM) – A 69-year-old woman, Mrs. Kate Bosede Akomolafe, has become a symbol of hope and lifelong learning after officially matriculating as an undergraduate at the University of Ibadan’s Distance Learning Centre (DLC) on Friday.
The emotional ceremony, monitored by Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), saw over 5,000 students taking their oaths for the 2024/2025 academic session, but Mrs. Akomolafe’s presence stole the spotlight as she confidently joined much younger peers in the academic pledge.
The elderly woman, dressed in the university’s ceremonial gown, was met with loud applause from students, staff, and parents who described her story as a powerful inspiration to all Nigerians, especially older adults who still dream of education.
In an interview after the event, Mrs. Akomolafe expressed deep gratitude to God for giving her the strength to return to school despite her age.
She said she had always desired a university education but life’s responsibilities delayed the dream.
“I have always believed that learning never stops. I thank God that today, at 69, I can finally call myself a student of the University of Ibadan,” she said with emotion.
Officials of the Distance Learning Centre praised her courage, describing it as a remarkable statement that education knows no age limit.
The Director of the Centre, Prof. Emmanuel Omobowale, said her story reflects the inclusive vision of the University of Ibadan in promoting lifelong learning and flexible education opportunities for Nigerians across generations.
He added that the Distance Learning Centre was established to provide access to quality education for individuals who, due to time, age, or work constraints, cannot attend regular classroom programs.
Many of her younger colleagues took selfies and shared pictures online, celebrating her as a living legend of resilience and determination.
Social media has since erupted with praise for Mrs. Akomolafe, with Nigerians describing her as an embodiment of courage and a beacon of inspiration for the nation’s youth and elderly alike.
Educational advocates have also applauded the development, urging others to emulate her example by prioritizing self-improvement and continuous learning regardless of age or background.
Mrs. Akomolafe’s journey, which began decades after she first dreamed of university education, now stands as a national reminder that age is no barrier to ambition and that the pursuit of knowledge remains a timeless path to personal fulfillment.
