An 85-year-old man, identified as Mzee James Olwal Obongo, has died after a swarm of bees attacked him and members of his family at Magare Village in Homa Bay Town.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, according to the area Assistant Chief, Washington Kidew.
Kidew said the deceased was returning home from a church event within the village when a swarm of bees suddenly emerged from a nearby bush and attacked him.
“He was attacked by the bees while on his way home, and unfortunately, he died at the scene,” the assistant chief said.
Family members who rushed to his rescue including his wife, Siprosa Anyango, his son, Kennedy Omondi, and his grandson were also attacked by the bees, sustaining serious injuries.
The injured victims were rescued by members of the public and taken to the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital, where they received treatment and were later discharged.
The body of the deceased has been preserved at the Homa Bay mortuary.
