U.S. TV. Icon Reveals How Trump Made Her Leave For the UK

Ellen DeGeneres has resurfaced in the public eye for the first time since relocating to the UK, speaking candidly during an appearance in Cheltenham about her new life abroad, the state of America, and the controversies that shadowed the final chapter of her talk show career.

Speaking at the Everyman Theatre in Gloucestershire, the former daytime TV icon revealed that her decision to move was prompted by the re-election of Donald Trump.

“We arrived the day before the election,” she said. “When we woke up to messages filled with crying emojis, we just said, ‘We’re staying here.’”

Ellen, 67, said she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, had initially planned to spend part of each year in the UK, purchasing what they thought would be a holiday home in the Cotswolds.

But what began as a seasonal escape has become a permanent relocation.

“Everything is just better here,” she told interviewer Richard Bacon.

“The people are kinder, it’s cleaner, and life feels simpler.”

She described falling in love with the British countryside and even posted glimpses of her rural life on social media, including time spent with chickens and, briefly, some rebellious sheep.

Portia brought over her horses, and the couple seems to have embraced the quiet beauty of their surroundings.

DeGeneres also touched on more serious themes, including LGBTQ+ rights.

She said the couple was considering renewing their vows in England amid mounting political efforts in the U.S. to roll back marriage equality.

Citing moves by the Southern Baptist Convention and various U.S. state legislatures to challenge the legality of same-sex marriage, Ellen expressed concern over growing threats to the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals.

“If it gets reversed, we’ll get married here,” she said.

“I wish we were at a place where it wasn’t scary for people to be who they are. But we’re not there yet.”

Reflecting on her career and the pressures of visibility, Ellen recalled how coming out in the 1990s led to her being essentially blacklisted from Hollywood.

While progress has been made, she believes many actors still conceal their identities.

“It’s still a problem,” she said.

“There are people I know who are gay and still aren’t out because they’re scared.”

She also addressed the workplace controversy that led to the abrupt end of The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2022.

The scandal, which involved allegations of a toxic work culture and misconduct by producers, painted her in a negative light.

Ellen admitted she can be “very blunt,” but dismissed much of the reporting as exaggerated and misleading.

“I’m a direct person,” she said.

“Does that mean I’m mean? Apparently.

“It’s wild that being called ‘mean’ is treated like the worst thing someone can say about a woman.”

The accusations clearly still sting.

“I hate that people think that about me because I know who I am,” she added.

“It’s hurtful, and certainly not how I wanted my show to end.”

Despite the controversy, Ellen said she still misses the connection she had with her audience and guests.

However, she doubts the traditional daytime talk format can succeed in today’s content-saturated world.

“I’d love to do it again,” she admitted, “but people’s attention spans are different now.

“Everyone’s on their phones.”

She didn’t rule out a return to the screen entirely, especially in the UK.

“I’d love to do a British talk show,” she said.

“I just don’t know what I want to do yet.

“I want to have fun.

“I love my chickens, but I’m a little bit bored.”

As she settles into life in the English countryside, Ellen DeGeneres appears to be embracing a quieter, more reflective chapter one shaped as much by personal conviction as by professional reinvention.

Whether it’s a return to comedy, activism, or something entirely new, she seems ready to choose her next move carefully, and on her own terms.
