The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered another alleged illegal herbal products manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, raising fresh concerns about the production and circulation of unregistered herbal products in Nigeria. The discovery was made on Thursday, October 22, 2026, following intelligence received by the agency on October 16 concerning the alleged production of Ashietu Adams Bitters bearing a fake NAFDAC registration number. According to Pharm. Edith Joseph, Deputy Director in charge of the Pharmaceutical Division, Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, NAFDAC, surveillance and intelligence gathering led investigators to the facility, which was reportedly concealed inside a residential building. Upon inspection, officials allegedly discovered three unregistered products being manufactured under unhygienic conditions. The agency also reported that one of the products displayed a fake NAFDAC registration number belonging to a registered cough syrup. Describing the conditions at the facility, Pharm. Joseph expressed shock over the state of the production environment, including the water reportedly used in manufacturing the products. She said the products were being manufactured outdoors in the open air and stressed that the facility was not approved by NAFDAC. The discovery has renewed concerns about consumer safety, the authenticity of herbal products and the risks associated with purchasing medicines and health products from unverified sources. A registration number displayed on a product should not automatically be taken as proof of authenticity, particularly when there are concerns about possible counterfeiting. NAFDAC's discovery also highlights the importance of regulatory inspections and public vigilance in tackling the production and distribution of unregistered products. Consumers are advised to verify the registration status of regulated products through NAFDAC's official channels and report suspected counterfeit or illegally manufactured products to the appropriate authorities. Watch this report for details of the shocking discovery in Agege, Lagos State, and the concerns raised by NAFDAC officials. What do you think should be done to stop the production and distribution of fake and unregistered herbal products in Nigeria? Share your thoughts in the comments.
