The Executive Director of Rule of Law And Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), Mr. Okechukwu Nwanguma, has kicked against the extension of the tenure of the retired Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar Adamu by President Muhammadu Buhari, saying that it is a case of clear illegality.

Mr. Nwanguma was reacting to a report published earlier by ElombahNews announcing the extension of the tenure of the retired Inspector-General of Police (IGP).

The report quoted the Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi who disclosed this on Thursday while briefing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Malam Dingyadi said that the decision to extend the IGP’s tenure for another three months was taken by President Buhari.

According to him, this will give enough time for proper selection of the new police helmsman.

Reacting to the development, the Rule of Law And Accountability Advocacy Centre Executive Director wondered where the President derive the power for such extension.

He noted that both the public service rule and the Police Act 2020 stipulate that Abubakar Adamu must go.

Nwanguma, therefore, warned Buhari against “acting in a manner that conflicts with the law”.

He said: “This is clear illegality.

“IGP Adamu attained 35 years in service on February 1, 2021 and was deemed to have retired from service on that date.

“Both the public service rule and the Police Act 2020 stipulate that he must go.

“Where did the President derive the power to extend the tenure of a retired IGP?
