The Vice-Chancellor of Chrisland University, Abeokuta, Prof. Chinedum Babalola, has called for review of education curriculum in Nigeria’s university system to make teaching and learning more effective.
Babalola made the call at a news conference in Abeokuta on Saturday.
She recommended inclusion of teacher-practitioner system in the curriculum.
According to Babalola, teacher-practioner system is a situation where practitioners with experience are engaged to teach in classrooms to apply work experiences and serve as role models to students.
The vice-chancellor said that the National Universities Commission (NUC) should make it mandatory for universities to apply teacher-practitioner system in training undergraduates.
She hailed the contributions of late ace broadcaster with Radio Nigeria, Mr Gbenga Ariba, who was a pioneer lecturer and former Acting Head of Mass Communication Department of Chrisland University.
Babalola described Ariba, aged 67, as an example of a teacher-practitioner model, saying he combined his experiences as a media professional with academics, to impact knowledge on students, until his death on March 10.
She said the university had imbibed the practice of applying teacher-practitioner system in various departments to produce graduates who were practical and problem solvers.
The vice-chancellor expressed optimism that the university would soon secure full accreditation from the NUC for three programmes including Mass Communication, Banking and Finance and International Relations.
She noted that the university in 2018 recorded 100 per cent accreditation for nine programmes (NAN)
