Nigerian Chelsea legend supports sports minister amid intense scrutiny

Former Chelsea legend and Super Eagles of Nigerian player, Celestine Babayaro, has asked critics Nigeria’s sports minister, Sen. John Enoh, to take a back and cut the former senator some slacks.

The Minister has come under increasing scrutiny over poor support for other sports apart from football in recent times.

But Babayaro insists that the minister has demonstrate good leadership and support for the country’s sports so far.

Babayaro commends Enoh for his efforts in mobilizing government support for national teams like the Super Eagles and the female national basketball team, D’Tigress.

The former player made this known via a press release early Monday morning to selected journalists.

Babayaro highlights the Minister’s timely interventions and financial support during events like the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), showing a true commitment to athletes and a unique administrative style without unnecessary controversies.

Babayaro, a respected figure in Nigerian sports, appreciates Enoh’s empathy and respect towards the sports industry and its practitioners, considering these qualities essential for the growth of sports in Nigeria.

He, however, advises the Minister to continue collaborating with stakeholders to enhance sports policies and development in the country.

Babayaro believes that if Minister Enoh continues on this path, history will judge him favorably. The positive impact of Enoh’s support on national teams like the Super Eagles and D’Tigress has been acknowledged by players and fans, he said.

According to him, the Minister’s proactive approach in securing government support has contributed significantly to the success of Nigerian athletes.

“The sports community hopes that Minister Enoh’s dedication will lead to more achievements for Nigerian athletes.

“They anticipate that Enoh will maintain a focus on collaboration and partnerships with individuals and organizations known for their excellence in the sports sector,” he added.

Babayaro is a retired Nigerian professional footballer who played as a left-back or left-wingback.

He is best known for his time playing for clubs such as Anderlecht, Chelsea, and Newcastle United, as well as representing the Nigerian national team.

Babayaro had a successful career, winning several domestic and international titles during his time as a professional footballer.
