Alhaji Alkasim Bala, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu,  on Saturday praised the Federal Government for investing in four new seaports.

Buhari had in his 2021 Democracy Day Speech said he approved building of Lekki Deep Sea Port, Bonny Deep Sea Port, Warri Deep Sea Port and Ibom Deep Sea Port through public/private partnership to grow the nation’s economy.

The president said that the seaports would create massive job opportunities and attract foreign investments.

Bala told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu that the ports, when completed, would also decongest the existing sea ports, especially Lagos ports.

He said the approval was timely as movement of goods from the new ports would be accelerated through the Port Harcourt- Maiduguri Rail Project recently flagged off by the president.

The lecturer, however, advised the Federal Government to consider building seaports in northern part of the country to ease transportation.

“There is the Baru Port in Niger which has not been put to use.

“The president had promised to reactivate the Lake Chad; that also has not been done.

“If Lake Chad and the stretches of River Benue in Adamawa are dredged, we can have other ports in the north.

“This is important considering the enormous revenue that can be generated from the ports as well as job opportunities that they can create,” Bala said.
