Gunmen attack Nnewi police station, cart away arms [update]

Gunmen have reportedly attacked the Police Area Command in Nnewi, Anambra State, and carted away an unspecified quantity of arms and ammunitions.

The incident took place on Monday while members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) enforced a sit-at-home order over their detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

According to a nearby resident who posted a short video clip of the attack, there was heavy shootings between the gunmen and Police.

The gun duel caused pandemonium amongst nearby residents of the town, forcing them duck behind locked doors.

According to sources, the gunmen, numbering about thirty, stormed the station midday with seven vehicles and engaged the Police in a gun duel that lasted for about an hour.

The source said the gunmen overpowered the police and made away with their arms though no casualty has been reported as at the time of the publication.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka that operatives successfully repelled the attackers who came in vehicles in the afternoon.

Ikenga said police and other security agencies are currently there to ensure that adequate security and the situation was under control.

But, a resident of the area who preferred anonymity told NAN that they heard heavy gun shots around the area command at about 2.pm on Monday.

“We gathered that the shooting was between suspected unknown gunmen and police at Nnewi Police Area Command and that caused pandemonium amongst the residents of Nnewi community,” he said.

The source added that the gunmen came in about seven vehicles to the police station and started shooting which lasted for over one hour.

He claimed that the gunmen overpowered the police and carted away arms at the station.

He said by the time reinforcement from the combined team of military arrived, the attackers had left.
