RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT: Nigerian vice chancellor says more lands required by universities

Prof Wahab Egbewole, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, on Saturday in a chat at the annual Media Iftar in Ilorin,  underscored the critical need for adequate land allocations to universities in order to significantly contribute to development.

He emphasized that the current land availability at the university is insufficient to support its objectives effectively.

During his speech, Prof Egbewole mentioned a strategic partnership with Oriental Energies that involves the allocation of 4,500 hectares of land for value addition farming on campus.

This initiative focuses on cultivating maize and soya bean crops with the aim of not only commercial production but also value addition.

The ultimate goal is to prepare these products for export, thereby enhancing the university’s economic impact.

Furthermore, the Vice Chancellor highlighted another project centered on grains, emphasizing the university’s commitment to innovation and global competitiveness.

By fostering an environment conducive to learning and productivity, Prof Egbewole reiterated the institution’s dedication to realizing its Smart Agenda.

Under his leadership, the University of Ilorin has made significant strides in enhancing infrastructure, student welfare, and overall academic excellence.

The recruitment of new academic and non-teaching staff, coupled with the remarkable achievements of alumni across diverse fields, reflects the institution’s commitment to excellence and progress.

Prof Egbewole commended the university’s unions for their responsible conduct during strikes, ensuring the uninterrupted flow of academic activities.
