 NHIS Set To Partner WHO For Technical Support & Capacity Building

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has opened talks with World Health Organisation (WHO) in the area of ICT Infrastructure, programme monitoring and Capacity building, which are fundamental to effective registration and administration components of NHIS operations, with the sole aim of increasing health coverage of Nigerian.

This was made know by the acting Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Mallam Attahiru Ibrahim, when he hosted a high-powered technical delegation from the World Health Organization (WHO), at the Scheme’s Corporate Headquarters in Abuja.

Attahiru, who described ICT Infrastructure, Monitoring and Evaluation as crucial to the operations of NHIS, expressed the commitment of the Scheme to taking advantage of every opportunity provided by the WHO to rapidly upscale the enrolment of Nigerian into the various programmes of the Scheme.

The General Manager Formal Sector Department of NHIS, Dr. Emmanuel Ohuakanwa, in his presentation, stated that the nationwide spread of the services of the Scheme as its beneficiaries are found everywhere, he stressed the strong need for NHIS to be able to communicate with its various stakeholders real time around the clock.

This, he said, is particularly so as the agency requires to monitor and receive feedback from beneficiaries and service providers under its watch to be able to discharge creditably, its regulatory roles in the industry.

Commending the NHIS team, the WHO Team leader Dr. Thomas Lapnet-Moustapha a specialist in Health Technology and Innovations WHO, highlighted health as a social service every government has, a responsibility to provide, describing NHIS as the tool of the Nigerian government for the purpose of ensuring that all citizens have access to healthcare.

He expressed delight to note that the Scheme is pressing forward in that task, as it continues to take Nigeria towards the global objective of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Dr. Thomas assures the Scheme that World Health Organizations will provide technical support and designs that can specifically meet the communication, monitoring and mapping requirements of NHIS, while customisation of facilities can be carried out for the Scheme where necessary.

He then urged NHIS Management to step up its advocacy and publicity drive of its programmes and activities and develop a roadmap of specific areas for healthcare financing.
