Former Arsenal winger Marc Overmars has been forced to step down from his role at Ajax over indecent messages sent to female colleagues.

Overmars made more than 140 appearances for Arsenal over a successful three-year stint, during which he won the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield.

He later moved onto Barcelona, while in retirement, he has worked as director of football for Ajax in his native Netherlands.

It has now been confirmed that Overmars will be leaving that role after allegations came to light that he had been sending inappropriate messages to female colleagues.

Overmarks released a rather frank and honest statement through club channels, confirming that he would be leaving the club as a consequence of his actions.

“I am ashamed.”

“Last week I was confronted with reports about my behaviour. And how this has come across to others.”

“Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that I was crossing the line with this, but that was made clear to me in recent days. I suddenly felt enormous pressure. I apologise.”

“Certainly for someone in my position, this behaviour is unacceptable. I now see that too. But it is too late. I see no other option but to leave Ajax.”

“This also has a major impact on my private situation. That is why I ask everyone to leave me and my family alone.”
