The Commissioner for Homeland Security in Imo State, Dr. Ugorji O. Ugorji, has asked the women of the state to assist the state government with their unique skills and power in building lasting peace and security in the state.

He made the request during a courtesy and solidarity visit by APC women leaders in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area on Saturday, February 12, 2022.

In his remarks to the women, Ugorji noted the significant and powerful roles women play in Igbo communities.

He said: “Governor Hope Uzodimma wants us to think outside the box. It is time to think creatively on issues of security, safety, and peace as it concerns the role of women.

“The August meeting of our sisters, wives, and mothers, is such a legendary cultural phenomenon within which methodologies in security and safety could be explored,” he noted.

“Perhaps the energy that our women bring annually to developmental projects in our communities can be harnessed to help us with our restive youths, with moral rejuvenation, and even with discouraging and stigmatizing politically orchestrated incidents of violence,” he added.

The Commissioner also said that the Ministry of Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs was committed to helping reduce violence against women in pursuit of security and safety in the state.

“The Honourable Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the State, Chief Akolisa, has agreed to enable the Ministry of Homeland Security and Vigilante Affairs establish a Legal Affairs Department, with lawyers to be deployed from his Ministry.

“The HOD of this department will work to train state security agents to be particularly sensitive to gender-based violence and how to handle victims with empathy and support.”

The women’s delegation of over 60 women from all 12 political Wards in the local government area was led by Mrs. Bernadine Mgbeahurike, the APC Woman Leader of the LGA.

The event was organized by Mrs. Ngozi Agharanya, a woman leader from the Commissioner’s Lorji Ward.

In her response, Mgbeahurike told the Commissioner “we are ready, if you are ready. All children are ours.

“We are prepared to partner with the state to try new approaches to redirecting those of our children who stray away from our teachings and those who act against our collective security and safety.”
