The protesters were holding a procession to commemorate the second-year anniversary of the #EndSARS protest that rocked Lagos and parts of Nigeria in October 2020.

Mr Macaroni, who is present at the procession, had announced the “peaceful walk” in honour of victims of police brutality and extrajudicial killings.

The security personnel, who also fired gunshots, attacked journalists, including Oba Adeoye of Arise TV, who were giving live coverage of the development at the venue.

According to Adeoye, trouble broke out when the protesters dropped a dummy coffin they were carrying right on the Lekki Toll Gate axis prompting a sharp reaction from the officers of the Lagos State Police Command.

A similar procession was held on October 20, 2021, which saw some of the participants, including Mr Macaroni, arrested but later released.

Before the commencement of the 2022 episode, officers of the Lagos Police Command stormed the Lekki Toll Gate fully armed and were seen in their scores with about 25 patrol vans.
