MultiChoice Reverts to Old Subscription Rates After Court Order

Published

MultiChoice, the owner of DStv and GOtv, has reverted to its old subscription rates.

The company had earlier increased its prices, but a court order mandated it to halt the hike.

Checks on the company’s apps on Sunday, June 16, 2024, showed that the old prices had been restored.

The Competition Consumer Tribunal (CCT) had ordered MultiChoice to revert to its old prices, and the company has complied.

However, MultiChoice has vowed to challenge the order, stating that it does not favor its business model.

The old prices for GOtv packages are as follows:

– GOtv Super+: N12,500 (previously increased to N15,700)
– GOtv Super: N7,600 (previously increased to N9,600)
– GOtv Max: N5,700
– GOtv Joli: N3,950
– GOtv Jinja: N2,700 (previously increased to N3,300)

It is unclear if MultiChoice will also offer a month-free subscription as ordered by the court.

The company has not officially confirmed the development, and its officials declined to comment on the issue.

MultiChoice had earlier increased its subscription prices, citing market realities, high inflation in Nigeria, and naira devaluation.

However, the court ruling has forced the company to revert to its old prices.

In a related development, MultiChoice has reported a decline in its subscriber base in Nigeria, losing over a million subscribers.

The company has also disclosed that it has an account balance of N31.6 billion with the liquidated Heritage Bank.

This development highlights the ongoing challenges in the Nigerian pay-TV market, with MultiChoice facing intense competition from other players.

The company’s decision to revert to its old prices may be a strategic move to retain its customer base and stay competitive in the market.
