In a significant move to combat the surge in deadly violence in Haiti, hundreds of Kenyan police officers have been deployed to lead a multinational force.
The deployment, which has been deemed unconstitutional by a court ruling, has sparked controversy, according to feelers gathered by Diaspora Digital Media.
President William Ruto has emphasized the importance of the mission, stating that it will demonstrate Kenya’s capability and contribution to global peace and security.
“The mission you are about to undertake is a vital one,” President Ruto addressed the officers. “Your performance will be a firm statement of Kenya’s capability and contribution to global peace and security. You are undertaking a vital mission that transcends borders and cultures. Your presence in Haiti will bring hope and relief to communities torn apart by violence and ravaged by disorder.”
Despite concerns about alleged abuses by Kenyan police officers, the initial group of 400 officers has been sent to Haiti as part of the United Nations-led force.
The deployment has been praised by US President Joe Biden, who has pledged $300 million to support the force.
The violence in Haiti has escalated significantly, with over 2,500 people killed or injured in the first three months of the year.
Gangs have taken control of at least 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and key roads, displacing over half a million people.
The violence and instability have led to the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
The deployment comes at a time when Kenyan police are under scrutiny for their use of excessive force during anti-government protests.
Watchdog groups have accused the police of using excessive force, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuring over 200.
