2023 was worst year for children in armed conflict, says UN

The United Nations has sounded the alarm on the devastating impact of armed conflict on children worldwide.

In 2023, the UN verified a staggering 32,990 grave violations against 22,557 children, marking the highest number of violations in nearly a decade.

The report reveals a harrowing picture of violence, recruitment, and abduction, with children bearing the brunt of armed conflict.

The killing and maiming of children surged by 35% compared to previous years, with 5,301 children killed and 6,348 injured.

The recruitment and use of children also skyrocketed, with 8,655 cases verified, including 15% girls who suffered multiple violations.

Child abductions continued at alarming levels, with 4,356 child victims verified in 2023.

The UN’s special representative for children, Virginia Gamba, emphasized that warring parties must prioritize the protection of children, stating, “There is no excuse for harming children during armed conflict.”

The report serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of war on children and the urgent need for international action to protect them.
