The court of appeal has reacted to the controversies surrounding the recently delivered judgment on the Kano governorship election dispute.
The appellate court in Abuja had on Friday affirmed the ruling of the Kano state governorship election petition tribunal which sacked Abba Yusuf, candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), as the governor.
But when the certified true copy of the judgement was released by the court on Tuesday, a number of contradictory declarations in the judgement was observed.
The certified true copy of the court of appeal ruling however revealed that the appellate court had set aside the judgement of the lower tribunal and affirmed the electoral victory of governor Abba Yusuf.
While addressing the situation, Umar Bangari, chief registrar of the court of appeal, said the purported discrepancy was a clerical error that did not affect the court’s decision.
The chief registrar promised Nigerians that the issue would be corrected once the parties involved filed a formal application.
He cited Order 23 Rule 4 of the Court of Appeal HandBook which empowered the court to correct any clerical error once detected by the court or any of the parties in the matter.
He insisted that contrary to insinuations, the judgement of the court remained valid.
There had been an uproar and series’ of interpretations into the judgement which upheld the judgment of Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal that invalidated the election of Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), as winner of the March 18 Governorship Election.
