Pres. Tinubu signs Law establishing South East Development Commission

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law a bill establishing the South East Development Commission (SEDC), marking a major milestone in the region’s quest for reconstruction and rehabilitation.

Diaspora Digital Media understands that the the bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Benjamin Okezie Kalu, was passed by the House in December 2023 and approved by the Senate in May 2024 before being transmitted to the president for his assent.

The SEDC is tasked with the responsibility of receiving and managing funds from the federation account for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructure damaged during the civil war.

The commission will also address ecological problems and other related environmental or developmental challenges in the Southeast states, including Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, and Ebonyi.

The signing of the bill into law has been hailed as a major victory for the region, with Honourable Kalu expressing gratitude to President Tinubu, his colleagues in the national assembly, and all Nigerians for supporting the bill.

The establishment of the SEDC is expected to bring significant relief to the region, which has faced numerous challenges in the aftermath of the civil war.

The commission’s mandate includes tackling the region’s infrastructure deficits, addressing environmental challenges, and promoting economic development.
