The British Army has officially opened its doors to Commonwealth citizens, including Nigerians, inviting them to join its ranks.
The recruitment window, which started August 19, 2024, will remain open until August 26, 2024.

Eligibility Criteria:
Age Requirements:
– Soldiers: Applicants must be at least 16 years old, with assessments starting as early as 15 years and 9 months. Those younger than 17 years and 6 months will first attend the Army Foundation College.
The maximum age for enlistment as a soldier is 36 years.
– Officers: The age range for officer candidates is between 18 and 29 years, with higher limits for certain specialist roles, such as doctors.
Educational Requirements:
– Officer candidates must have a minimum of 35 ALIS points from seven subjects, including a grade C/4 in English Language, Maths, and either Science or a foreign language. Additionally, 72 UCAS Tariff points from three subjects are required.
Medical Screening:
– A critical aspect of the recruitment process is medical screening, particularly for Sickle Cell traits, which are common in Commonwealth countries.
While having the Sickle Cell Trait does not disqualify candidates, those identified as higher risk will need to undergo further diagnostic tests.
Fitness and Lifestyle Requirements:
– Candidates must pass several fitness tests, including the Multistage Fitness Test (Beep Test), Seated Ball Throw, and Mid Thigh Pull. The British Army provides guidance to help applicants achieve the required fitness levels and encourages maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Appearance Guidelines:
– Tattoos and piercings are allowed under specific guidelines. Tattoos must not be offensive or visible in passport photos, and while hand and neck tattoos are permitted, tattoos on the head and face are not. Jewelry must be removed during physical activities, and certain piercings that alter appearance may lead to disqualification.
Criminal Convictions:
– Applicants must disclose any unspent criminal convictions. The British Army takes a rehabilitative approach, acknowledging that some convictions may be considered “spent” after a rehabilitation period.

The application window is strictly limited to one week, from August 19 to August 26, 2024. Candidates should be prepared to travel to the UK for further assessments scheduled for October and November 2024.
