Gunmen in the wee hours of Friday, launched a vicious attack on the Atani headquarters of Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State, setting the facility on fire.

The attackers, said to be over 30 in number, according to media reports, were heavily armed and approached from the Umuzu and Amiyi areas.

They were equipped with guns and dynamite, which they used to attack the local government premises.

A source who doesn’t want to be quoted revealed that the attack occurred around 5am. The assailants operated without any opposition for over an hour, during which they set four buildings ablaze before eloping.

Reports indicate that the only structure left standing is the one housing the office of the local government chairman, which sustained partial damage.

Additionally, the canteen was also affected.

“They came on foot, carrying various firearms and dynamite. Their attack left four buildings in the local government compound completely destroyed, and they also set a vehicle on fire,” a source in the area recounted.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of the command in Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, noting that a joint team of police and vigilante members responded by pursuing the attackers.

Ikenga also confirmed the extensive damage to the local government headquarters and stated that ongoing security operations are aimed at arresting the criminals.
